NEO

(to the screen)

What if it did one thing, and did it beautifully?

On the desk, a phone reboots into . On a second screen, , mid-frame.

NEO (V.O.)

I don’t keep things the way they ship.

The phone in my pocket runs a system I flashed by hand. My desktop gets rebuilt one widget at a time. Every default gets a second opinion. And whatever I make goes back out with the source attached, because that is how almost everything I use reached me.

Bonus features

Trivia, deleted scenes and the odd confession. The arrow keys work, for anyone who misses a DVD remote.

  1. The name

Dip, written દીપ, means lamp. Neo means new. Together that makes a new light, which is a lot to live up to.

  2. An audience of one

Built an Android app for exactly one person: Mom. It rotates videos. It does nothing else, on purpose.

  3. Where your data goes

Most of these apps make no network requests at all. The README for get stuff done! lists every place your data is sent. The list has one item: nowhere.

  4. The terminal

kitty, JetBrains Mono at 13 points, zsh, and a plum and rose theme. You are looking at it: this whole page is painted in the same colours.

  5. The phone

Runs a custom ROM. Stock firmware gets treated as a first draft.

  6. The fonts

Keeps a repository of favourite Gujarati fonts, just in case. Typefaces deserve backups too.

  7. 306 stars

Has starred 306 repositories on GitHub, from the Linux kernel to a Ludo game written in React Native.

  8. Fan work

Made a whole website for Berserk. Some stories earn one.

  9. A daily ritual

Reads the Hanuman Chalisa every day, from a small web page built for exactly that.

  10. A fan theory

strider-ape might be two films in a trench coat: Strider, Aragorn’s ranger name in The Lord of the Rings, and the ape from Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Both are on the shelf.

  11. The films

There is always a film queued up. The video store holds fifty-five of them, and it will pick tonight’s double feature for you.
